Air to Air Dream Team
In July we had the privilege of spending the day with the Greater Manchester Police Air Unit, and Flying TV’s aerial filming crew. The client was Specialist Aviation Services, for whom we’re making a 12-minute film for their 25th Anniversary. Like any profession that sounds exciting…
And when you’ve been doing it a good while, filming is just your job, albeit with great variety. However, there are some days where you look back with wonder and think: that was pretty damn cool! With Hamish in the Police helicopter, and me in the Flying TV helicopter the skill with which the pilots manoeuvred around each other looked effortless. However you know that those guys are so highly trained they could show a dragonfly a thing or two.
On top of all that aerobatic wizardry, we also had a great camera operator, Monica Wyer. This is a great example of getting great value for money from a professional who knows just what works and what doesn’t. I’ve done a few aerial shoots over the years, in far off places with fixed wing and rotor. You were lucky to just get a good 10 second stretch out of an extremely costly flight. However with Flying TV’s very neat gyro-stabilised set-up, an hour’s flight leaves you spoilt for choice.
